National Protect Your Identity Week - My New York Legal Help

You are here: Home / Internet Fraud / National Protect Your Identity Week: Make sure to talk to common targets: seniors, children, and teens about ID Theft

This week is National Protect Your Identity Week (October 20-27th). Identity theft is happening all around you and it?s important to learn how to protect yourself and your family. For example, don?t carry you Social Security card in your wallet, never write down crucial PIN numbers, and shred documents that have information that needs to be safe-guarded.

Be sure to talk to the seniors in your family about identity theft?they are a common target because they may be less tech-savvy, are likely to have good credit and may be more trusting. At the same time, make sure to take to your kids about identity theft.? If a child?s identity is stolen, it might be years until it?s noticed due to lack of credit checks and other documentation. Sharing useful tips and resources with your family and friends could end up saving someone from fraud later down the road.

Last, with tax season right around the corner, be aware that identity thieves are submitting fraudulent tax refund claims with the IRS?if you are a victim, contact the Tax Payer Advocate Service at ?1-877-777-4778.

Learn more tips and how to report identity theft so you?re prepared for anything that comes your way.
