PARIS ? The benefits of preemptive breast cancer screening outweigh the risks, a study said Tuesday, insisting the practice saves thousands of lives.
The new research adds to the debate about the dangers of overdiagnosis, which sees some women undergo invasive treatment for cancers that would never have made them ill or even been diagnosed were it not for the scans.
?Breast screening extends lives,? concluded a panel of researchers in The Lancet medical journal.
The team had analysed data from other trials conducted over many years in Britain, where women aged 50 to 70 are invited for a screening mammogram every three years.
The data, it said, pointed to a 20 percent reduction in mortality ? or one death prevented for every 180 women screened.
This meant that the UK screening programmes ?probably prevent about 1,300 breast cancer deaths every year,? said the report.
But there is a cost.
Nearly 20 percent of breast cancer diagnosed by screening would never have caused any problems, said the study.
The panel, set up to advise British policymakers, estimated that among every 10,000 women invited to screening from the age of 50 in the Britain, 681 cancers would be discovered, of which 129 would be overdiagnoses, and 43 deaths prevented.
The report showed that ?the UK breast-screening programme extends lives and that, overall, the benefits outweigh the harms,? The Lancet wrote in an editorial.
?Women need to have full and complete access to this latest evidence in order to make an informed choice about breast cancer screening.?
The team conceded there were limitations to its work, including that all the data scrutinised was more than 20 years old.
Cancer experts have been at loggerheads for years about whether the benefits of screening outweigh the harm of overdiagnosis.
All cancer, once picked up in the screening process, is treated, often with surgery as well as radio- and chemotherapy, as it is impossible to tell which growths would have remained undetected for the remainder of a woman?s life.
In August, medical experts Steven Woloshin and Lisa Schwartz wrote in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) that screening only narrowly decreased risks that a 50-year-old woman would die from breast cancer within 10 years ? from 0.53 percent to 0.46 percent.
Up to half of women screened annually over 10 years experienced at least one false alarm that required a biopsy, they said.
And in 2010, a report in the New England Journal of Medicine said mammograms have only a ?modest? impact on reducing breast cancer deaths.
The latest panel had been created by the national cancer director for England, Mike Richards and Cancer Research UK chief executive officer Harpal Kumar.
Its work, said The Lancet, ?should begin to lay the benefits versus harm controversy to rest?.

This is a great activity that you can do indoors, or out.
Step one ? Dig out that digital camera (since you need to conserve what cell phone battery you have left).
Step two ? Take extreme close-ups of various items around your house or yard. If your kids are younger, keep the pictures a little wider.
Step three ? Set them loose with the camera to find the items in the pictures.
By now you?ve likely cycled through all of the tolerable (and some of the intolerable) board games in your collection. So challenge your kids to make their own. Mixing and matching pieces from games they have, or adding in household objects, have the kids create their own game with their own rules. But make sure the rules get written down! Now as you play, your kids will have to problem solve through the inevitable twists and turns of the game that they didn?t anticipate.
Toss a pile of sheets and blankets in the living room, let them know what furniture is off limits, and set them loose. A couch, two folding chairs and a sheet transform into a cozy bungalow. Add a card table and suddenly you have a multi-room suite. Your kids will have to use their creativity and work together to build a structure that suits them all.
Weren?t planning to dress up with your kids for Trick-or-Treating? You are now ? and your kids are in charge. Challenge them to come up with a costume for you, using only items found in your house. You may end up wearing a mop for a wig, or dressed as a member of the opposite sex? but if you?re willing to check your pride at the door, this could be a lot of fun.
What better way to get a kid to clean out their closet or toy room than to remind them that there?s no room for new loot. Santa is only allowed to deliver toys that fit? so let?s motivate and make room! They may not get very far, as they discover toys they haven?t played with in months or years? but isn?t the point to keep them busy?

There ain't much here we haven't seen before, but look -- it's a video. The thoroughly leaked LG Nexus 4 -- which was likely scheduled to be formally unveiled today if not for Hurricane Sandy -- has shown up in a 107 second video hosted up by Swedroid. We're guessing that select international sites briefed on the handset weren't hearing any of that "delay" stuff, and have instead let loose on the material they had access to. The hardware itself is no surprise, boasting clean lines and a minimalistic motif that looks a hair thicker than we had envisioned before. Android 4.2 looks right at home, though -- as if you haven't seen enough of that in the Nexus 10 leak. Head on past the break and press play, won't you?

Ford's vaunted reliability ratings have stalled, and their controversial MyFord infotainment system is partially to blame.
?
The domestic brand once boasted top ten status in Consumer Reports' predicted reliability ratings, but a confluence of unfortunate factors plummeted their rankings to a dismal second-to-last place out of 28 brands surveyed, despite several buzzworthy introductions like the Focus ST and CMAX Hybrid.
?
CR cites three reasons for the drop: the aforementioned disappointment of MyFord/MyLincoln and its spread to more models, problems associated with new or updated Explorer, Fiesta, and Focus models, and the fact that three historically reliable vehicles-- the Escape, Fusion, and Lincoln MKZ-- were not included in this year's analysis.
?
The findings are based on subscriber feedback from 1.2 million vehicles, and reflect the difficulty of creating intuitive, easy to learn multimedia interfaces, not to mention the balancing act of introducing vehicle updates while maintaining reliability.?
?
The survey also claimed the Prius C as the top scorer, with Cadillac, the top US brand in the study, moving up 14 spots in the rankings.

Toledo Public Schools has a new 4.9 mill levy on the November ballot.?This is on top of the 64.39 mills it already collects and in addition to its $11.22 million carryover from the 2011-12 school year.
While this would seem to be enough money ? at least to get through to next year ? TPS is running a campaign urging voters to increase the taxes they pay by $13.3 million a year.
But who is behind the push to raise the property taxes?
You?re probably thinking that the majority of contributions to the levy campaign came from unions, especially the teachers and administration unions who represent employees in the district.
You would be wrong.
Certainly the unions, along with the school board and school administration, want more money, but it is businesses who are the largest contributors.
Of the $53,196.95 raised and reported on the Committee for Schools pre-general campaign finance report, 60 percent comes from vendors of the school district.
When you think about it, it makes sense.?If the school district has more money, it can pay these companies for more things.?Unions have donated $12,000 through Oct. 17, the last day of the reporting period.
The largest contributor is the district?s law firm, Marshall & Melhorn, who gave the campaign $10,000.?Four attorneys with the firm, including three who have represented TPS, each gave $500.?That?s not bad considering that TPS has paid them $243,823.47 through September this year, according to documents on the TPS website.
Other large contributors included ProMedica, Buckeye Telesystems, Rice Securities and Squire Sanders, along with construction firms handling the school building program.
What is missing, so far, is a donation from the Toledo Federation of Teachers, the union representing teachers in the district.
Another interesting fact about the Committee for Schools report is the amount of donations coming from outside the city of Toledo.?Nearly 52 percent comes from people who do not have a Toledo address on the campaign finance report.
They?re not going to pay the proposed tax, but they?re helping to pass a levy so others will.
The businesses that are donating who are in the district won?t really pay the tax either.?They?ll just pass that additional overhead on to their clients who will end up paying more for their services as a result.?Toledoans will pay twice ? once for their own taxes and then again when they pay higher prices for the products the business contributors sell.
For TPS, this means that its vendors will raise their prices, and TPS will need even more money to pay those additional costs, so it?ll ask for another levy, which it?ll fund through contributions from vendors, who will then raise their prices when the levy passes.
It?s a vicious cycle with taxpayers footing the bill.
But it?s not just Toledo.?Matt Mayer, in his book ?Taxpayers Don?t Stand A Chance,? noted that the entire $41,000 spent by the Good Schools Committee on behalf of a 2011 Dublin City Schools levy came from vendors and school district employees.
Mayer also notes that rarely do traditional media outlets share this information with voters as part of their levy reporting.
With 1,055 tax levies on the ballot in Ohio this year ? 151 of which are for schools ? voters should check the campaign finance reports to see who is behind the quest to raise their taxes.
Campaign finance reports are all public records and are available from your county Board of Elections.

AUSTIN (KXAN) - The farmer
The Sept. 27, 1908, edition of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram carried a dispatch from Dresden, Tenn.
The article reported on a bizarre event that took place in that far northern corner of the Volunteer State, involving a farmer by the name of Jim Swift.
Seems the farmer was ?constitutionally averse to baths.? After suffering sudden pain in his loins while working in his fields, someone advised the farmer to bathe his feet in cold water, the article noted.
Sure enough, the pain immediately vanished, but Swift, upon withdrawing his feet from the water, noticed they were now quite numb.
?An operation was performed and both legs were removed at the knees. It is not expected,? the report noted, ?that Swift will survive.?
It was clearly a bad day for the aforementioned agriculturist, but learning about the article kicked off a most enjoyable Tuesday evening this week for this Jim Swift.
The request
You see, back in September, a member of the Austin Genealogical Society contacted me and asked if I might volunteer a side of my family for society researchers to explore. It seems the nonprofit organization was eager to get the word out concerning the work it does in assisting people with their family tree investigations.
NBC, at the time, was running a series called: "Who Do You Think You Are?" The program revealed genealogical backgrounds of various celebrities, and the AGS thought it might be fun to do something similar for a society program.
The network wound up canceling the series, but that in no way deterred the AGS from its mission.
The report
Just over a year later, I found myself before an audience that included my brother, Tom Swift, for the report.
I had suggested the society pursue the family line on the side of our father, William Dewey Swift, the son of Walter and Dorothy Swift, poor northern Tennessee farmers, who lived only a county or two away from the unfortunate farmer Jim Swift (who may or not be related, as it turns out).
You see, my mother?s (Elizabeth Fitch Swift) family tree is already well-documented, revealing ancestors who rode on the ship, Mayflower . But nobody knew squat about the Swift folks.
So AGS researchers went to work. They scoured birth, marriage and death records online. They sought out newspaper stories. They scanned pension applications and Census data. During regularly scheduled trips to genealogical libraries in Salt Lake City and Houston. They pored over every available record, looking for clues to the names of people whose various conjugal relations ultimately produced a long-haired TV news reporter in Austin, Texas.
The results
The work paid off. I already had photographs and names to go with them, of my grandparents and both sets of great-grandparents. I also had a photo of one set of great-great-grandparents, but they were nameless in my family records.
Now, they are nameless, no more. My great-great-grandfather turned out to be a well facially-hair-endowed fellow with the patriotic name of Thomas Jefferson Swift. And his wife, well, it turns out she was a member of the Tennessee Crockett Family: Emily Carrie Crockett.
Immediately, the AGS researchers wondered if she, and therefore me, were related to the ?King of the Wild Frontier,? himself, Davy Crockett, once a member of the United States Congress and a defender and casualty of the battle of the Alamo during the Texas revolution.
?We tried our best,? said researcher Jane Schwendinger, ?and?there is a probable connection.?
The investigation also took my dad?s confirmed family line back farther than I had ever seen it go before. Thomas Jefferson Swift, for example, was the son of James Thomas Swift, born on an unknown date in Kentucky. James Thomas married Susanna Moore, who had been born in Tennessee on Dec. 2, 1796.
Indeed, the AGS discovered one family line that went all the way back to a woman named Margaret who was born in Ireland in July of 1734.
Eventually, though, the researchers just had to stop. They were running short on time and in any case, the whole idea was to simply get me started, as a way of helping other people realize what might be possible for them. Now, it is my job to keep the work going.
The fun
So the next day, just for fun, I typed, ?Swift Montgomery County Tennessee? and Swift ?Dickson County Tennessee? into a search engine. Suddenly, I was staring at a page that included not only the days on which Thomas Jefferson and Emily Carrie Crockett Swift died, but also how they met their demises.
Then, I learned that similar, though slightly different versions of the same stories were included in, ?Swift, Trotter, Crockett, Scott Family Lines of Descent,? the book the AGS put together, complete with meticulous sourcing, to chronicle its work on my family.
The deaths
It seems my great-great-grandmother, Emily Carrie Crockett Swift, burned to death in an accident at her Montgomery County, Tenn., cabin in 1841. Five or six years later, her husband, Thomas Jefferson Swift,
appears to have been hauling a wagon load of tobacco to nearby Clarkesville, Tenn. (later the birthplace of most of my uncles, aunts and cousins). The unfortunate man evidently took a tumble off the wagon and broke his neck.
Such tales only point to the remarkable satisfaction that can come from a concerted effort to reach beyond the veil of history that clouds who we think we are.
The help
For those who want to poke around behind that veil for themselves, the Austin Genealogical Society stands ready to help. The organization offers member meetings and programs, workshops, seminars and research trips. All of the activities are open to the public.
There is so much to learn, including that those who are constitutionally averse to bathing should think twice before putting their feet in cold water.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 26, 2012) ? When surgeons operate to remove a tumor, determining exactly where to cut can be tricky. Ideally, the entire tumor should be removed while leaving a continuous layer of healthy tissue, but current techniques for locating the tumors during surgery are imprecise. Now a multidisciplinary team from the University of California, San Diego, is developing an alternate means of precisely tagging breast cancer tumors for removal or targeted destruction.
They will present the results of their investigations at the AVS 59th International Symposium and Exhibition, held Oct. 28 -- Nov. 2 in Tampa, Fla.
Breast cancer is the most common female cancer in the U.S., and the main cause of death in women ages 40-59, according to UptoDate, an information service for clinical physicians. Over a lifetime, 1 in 8 women in the U.S. is expected to develop breast cancer. Despite great strides in survival, there is trauma associated not only with the disease, but also with its treatment. Many women want to avoid a full mastectomy, but conventional breast-conserving approaches, such as lumpectomy, can be arduous. Up to 25 percent of lumpectomies require a second surgery to excise the entire tumor.
The UCSD team is working on a better method for tagging tumors that should reduce the need for follow-up surgeries. The researchers developed iron-doped -- and therefore biodegradable -- silica micro/nano spheres for implanting into the body as ultrasound contrast markers to guide a surgeon using ultrasound during breast lumpectomy. Additionally, the particles can also be used to destroy tumor tissue with high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablative therapy, an approach used elsewhere in the world to treat prostate cancer and used in the U.S. to treat uterine fibroids.
If breast tumors are precisely marked, the number of second surgeries can be decreased by 50 percent, according to published studies using radiative tumor markers. Because the gas-filled nanoparticles that the researchers developed make tumors easier to see, they hold the potential for increasing surgical precision with a safe agent. Once injected into the breast cancer tumor, they stick, rendering the tumor more visible with contrast-enhanced ultrasound.
"We are trying to improve the markers surgeons use so they can pull the tumors out with more precision and ease, while reducing trauma for the patient," explains Alex Liberman, the PhD graduate student in the materials science and engineering program who has taken the concept from test tube to animal models. Adds his advisor, chemical physicist Andrew Kummel, PhD: "We are using these particles for two applications. In the short term we are injecting them into breast tumors to enable surgeons to halve the number of second surgeries by readily locating the tumors in the operating room with low- power ultrasound imaging. In the long term, we want to inject the particles intravenously, have them stick to the tumors, and then ablate the tumors by blowing up the particles with high intensity focus ultrasound which is called HIFU."
As now performed, the lumpectomy requires a surgeon to extract tumors through incisions in the breast with the aid of guide wires that protrude out of the breast to help locate the tumor. The wires are prone to movement, and therefore yield imprecise results. Furthermore, the wires are inserted while the patient is awake, which is unpleasant for the patient.
The next step for the team involves conducting more animal tumor studies. Those results will determine if the particles are suitable technology to submit to human clinical breast cancer trials as a localizing agent to guide lumpectomy surgery or even for HIFU therapy.

LONDON (AP) ? Disgraced BBC entertainer Jimmy Savile was investigated in the 1980s over an allegation of indecent assault, police said Thursday as they announced that 300 potential victims had come forward so far with abuse accusations against the late TV host.
The twin announcements showed how a sex abuse scandal that is engulfing one of Britain's most venerable news organizations was showing no signs of abating.
Officers have interviewed 130 of the 300 potential victims so far and even more are expected to contact authorities, Commander Peter Spindler, leader of the Scotland Yard inquiry, said Thursday.
The well-known children's television and radio presenter is accused of using his fame to coerce vulnerable teens into having sex with him in his car, in his camper van, and even in dressing rooms on BBC premises.
The police commander acknowledged he had been stunned by the volume of abuse allegations reported to his team of 30 officers in the three weeks since details about Savile's activities first came to public attention.
"It is quite staggering, the number of women ... and this is primarily women, we have only got two men in the system so far," Spindler said.
Spindler said Savile, who died last October at age 84, was "undoubtedly" one of the worst sex offenders in recent British history.
Since the allegations aired on British television this month, London police have received three times the usual number of calls about allegations of past sexual abuse. The NSPCC, a leading British children's charity, said it had received 60 percent more calls about abuse cases.
"I have no doubt that we are in a watershed moment for child abuse investigations," Spindler said.
Previously feted for his charity work at hospitals and homes for children, Savile is alleged to have deliberately supported such causes to target troubled youths whose credibility would be questioned if they reported the alleged sexual abuse.
Spindler said although the majority of cases related to Savile alone, some involved the former television presenter and other unidentified suspects acting together. In addition, some potential victims who had reported abuse by Savile also told police about separate allegations against the unidentified men that did not involve the BBC entertainer.
He confirmed that police could seek to prosecute any suspects who are still living but said no one has been arrested or questioned so far.
Spindler also disclosed for the first time that a retired London police officer had contacted Scotland Yard to confirm that he investigated Savile in the 1980s after a young woman alleged he indecently assaulted her inside his trailer while it was parked on BBC premises. The ex-officer explained there hadn't been sufficient evidence to prosecute Savile at the time, Spindler said.
Police have also discovered that a woman contacted Scotland Yard in 2003 to allege Savile had touched her inappropriately in the 1970s but did not seek to press charges. Surrey Police also have acknowledged they questioned Savile in 2007 over an allegation tied to the Duncroft school but prosecutors declined to bring charges.
The Savile scandal has rocked the BBC and prompted disbelief that the presenter's crimes could have gone unnoticed or unreported by colleagues or managers.
Executives are facing sharp questions about what they knew and an internal inquiry is reviewing why a posthumous BBC investigation about Savile's sex crimes was shelved. The report was scrapped weeks before the broadcaster aired a series of tribute shows.
Mark Thompson, BBC director-general from 2004 until last month who is now the incoming CEO of the New York Times, is among those facing questions from U.K. lawmakers. Thompson has insisted that he never met Savile, was unaware of rumors about his behavior and had little knowledge of the cancelled expose.
In a letter to The New York Times staff Thursday, chairman and publisher Arthur Sulzberger said Thompson had thoroughly explained his handling of the issue.
"Mark has provided a detailed account of that matter, and I am satisfied that he played no role in the cancellation of the segment," Sulzberger wrote.
"Our opinion was then and remains now that he possesses high ethical standards and is the ideal person to lead our company," the letter said.
Savile was the original presenter of the music countdown program "Top of the Pops," which ran on BBC television from 1964 to 2006, featuring performances by everyone from The Rolling Stones to the Sex Pistols. For almost 20 years from 1975, Savile also made children's dreams come true on "Jim'll Fix It," a TV show.
Savile championed a host of good causes, frequently running marathons to raise money. He helped to collect millions for the creation of a national spinal injuries center at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in southern England and bequeathed money for a heart unit at Leeds infirmary named the Savile Institute.
He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for services to charity and entertainment and received a papal knighthood from the Vatican.
Prince Charles was among those who paid tribute when Savile died last year.

DOWNEY, Calif. (AP) ? As police searched for a gunman who killed three people and critically wounded two others in suburban Los Angeles, friends and neighbors of the family targeted in the attack grappled for answers on Thursday.
Authorities have been mum regarding a motive for the shootings and haven't identified a suspect.
The gunman doesn't appear to be a former employee, friend or family member, Downy police Lt. Dean Milligan said. Police, however, say they don't believe the killings were a random act of violence.
Authorities are still looking for a stolen black Camaro, which they say the suspect used to get away after the shootings.
Police have not identified the five victims, but a portrait began to emerge of a tight-knit family who threw large parties and ran a successful company.
Prayer candles and flowers were left at the home and nearby business where the shootings took place. A sign decorated with pink hearts and flowers was left outside the house, reading "RIP Susana, to a great mother."
Workers returned to the industrial strip where the first shots were fired at the small family-owned fire extinguisher company.
"This is absolutely heartbreaking," said Dean Wright, who owns the septic supply business next door. "The guy who did this had to be absolutely crazy."
Richard Mercado, 36, a family friend, said he grew up with the two brothers who ran United States Fire Protection Services Inc., which sells professional firefighting gear and equipment.
Mercado said the siblings made a lot of money with the business and that they also liked to buy and sell motorcycles and cars.
"If they saw money to be made they would invest in it," Mercado said. "They always had extra money."
Police said the deadly encounter began around midday Wednesday and that someone called from the business to reporting a shooting.
A few minutes after police arrived, a 13-year-old boy called dispatchers from the family house just down the street, authorities said, where the second shooting happened.
The gunman fled in a 2010 black Camaro that is registered to Maria Fuentes, the mother of the business owners. Wright said she was shot in the face at the business and survived. The other survivor is the teenage boy, Wright said. Authorities said the two survivors of the shooting are in critical condition.
A female secretary and a male employee were killed at the business, according to Wright. At the family's home, the shooter killed the wife of one of the brothers, he said.
The woman and teenager were originally at the business, but somehow got to the home in the Camaro before being shot, according to police. Police don't know whether they drove themselves or were kidnapped by the suspect.
There was no sign of forced entry at either location and police believe the suspect spoke with the victims at both locations before the shooting began. The teen victim, however, did not recognize the gunman, Milligan has said.
The house is a duplex facing foreclosure in a process that began last December, according to real estate records. The property was scheduled to be auctioned Nov. 26 with an asking price of about $837,000.
Lizzy Bonilla, who recently moved in across the street, said she was at home at the time of the shooting and didn't hear any gunfire or commotion until police arrived.
Bonilla, 19, said the family had large parties, most of the time during the day, which was accompanied by Mexican music.
"They had party buses leaving from their property," she said. "They were a big family, and they looked like they were always having fun."
Mercado, the family friend, said he's been trying to reach one of the brothers who had been in Mexico this week but has been unsuccessful. He questioned why trouble would find its way to his friends.
"They ran their business like everyone else," he said. "But maybe they did something wrong and it caught up with them."
