MANILA ? Farm-sector output grew less than a percent in the first 6 months of the year, the Department of Agriculture said on Monday.

In press conference, Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said first-half growth came in at 0.93 percent to P691.4 billion at current prices.

Accounting for half of the farm-sector output, the crop sub-sector rose 1.5 percent to P392.3 billion.

The country?s rice harvest increased 4.2 percent to 7.89 million metric tons from last year?s 7.58 million.

The DA ascribed the increase to good weather in the first six months and to the agency?s provision of quality seeds, increased irrigation.

In the second quarter alone, palay harvest grew 10 percent to 3.9 million metric tons from last year?s 3.53 million.

?Palay production for the entire year may reach 17.8 million metric tons, which is lower than our previous estimate of 18.4 million. But despite our conservative estimate, it will be another record harvest or at least 6.7 percent higher than last year?s 16.68 million,? Alcala said.

No need for more rice imports

He also ruled out the need for importing more rice even after heavy rains and flooding in key rice production areas.

Based on a survey of standing crops in July, the DA-Bureau of Agricultural Statistics said third-quarter palay production may reach 3.56 million, or 12 percent more than the 3.17 million in 2011.

According to planting intentions, fourth-quarter production is seen to hit 6.36 million metric tons, or 7 percent more than the 5.94 million last year.

As for corn, production increased by 4.8 percent to 3.47 million metric tons in the first half from 3.31 million in 2011. Second-quarter output was up 4 percent to 1.45 million.

Citing third-quarter standing crop and fourth-quarter planting intentions, Alcala said second-half harvest may reach 3.99 million metric tons.

??Total corn production for the entire 2012 may reach 7.46 million metric tons, which is also a record harvest, and seven percent higher than the 6.97 million output in 2011,? he said.

DA-BAS data showed other crops also recorded growth as follows:

- Coconut, 5.5 percent;

- Pineapple, 4.4 percent;

- Coffee, 4.4 percent;

- Tobacco, 3.8 percent;

- Abaca, 3.1 percent;

- Cabbage, 3 percent; and

- Rubber, 6.7 percent.

The poultry sub-sector contributed 13.9 percent to total agriculture output and grew 5.5 percent to P81.3 billion.

The livestock sub-sector chipped in 15.2 percent to total farm output and inched up 0.5 percent to P100.3 billion.

However, the fisheries sub-sector contracted 3.3 percent to P117.4 billion, contributing 18.8 percent of total agriculture production.
