It can be difficult to know if your pet bird is ill if you are not aware of the telltale?signs that indicate it is feeling a bit under the weather. Part of being a responsible bird owner is to familiarize yourself with the more common diseases that may affect your pet. With most bird ailments, the sooner you detect the possible illness your bird is afflicted with, the higher its chances of survival.? Knowing the symptoms of the common diseases that affect birds in captivity is the first step in the proper care and maintenance of pet birds.
Here are a few of the common bird diseases:
Psittacosis - Also known as Parrot Fever, it is a type of Chlamydia bacterium that affects the hook bills of an infected bird. This is a highly contagious disease that can be passed to other birds, animals and even humans.
Symptoms: Eye infections, difficulty in breathing, watery or loose bird droppings, and lethargy.
Proventricular Dilatation Disease (PDD) ? This type of disease can be spread from bird to bird and the way it is passed on is still unknown.? It is also known as Parrot Wasting Syndrome and Macaw Wasting Syndrome.
Symptoms: Weight loss, having a swollen crop (a muscle tissue that stores and softens the food birds eat), change in the appearance of bird droppings, and vomiting.
Candida - This type of disease is also known as Candidiasis infections. This can infect all types of birds. Birds with the disease have an overgrowth of yeast in their digestive system.
Symptoms: Appearance of white lesions in the mouth and throat area, loss of appetite, vomiting, and having a crop that is slow to empty. This can be treated with anti-fungal medications.
If you notice any signs and symptoms, consult your veterinarian immediately.
Polyomavirus ? This type of disease causes a bird?s tail feathers and flight feathers to grow abnormally. There are some instances when birds that are carriers of this disease do not manifest any symptoms but when stressed, they may pose a risk in spreading the disease to other birds.
Symptoms: Loss of appetite, bloated abdomen, diarrhea, and paralysis.
Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD) ? This is a type of illness that can affect all members of the parrot family. Most birds that are infected by the disease are usually younger than two years old but it is known to affect birds of any age.
Symptoms: Loss of feathers, abnormal growth of feathers, lesions, and abnormalities with the beak.
