This Apple TV Concept Video Raises A Big Question About The Very Idea Of An Apple TV (AAPL)

Thanks to countless reports from analysts and others, we've all been expecting an Apple TV for a while now.

These days, Apple shareholders in particular would love to see one come out.

The smartphone market is pretty saturated now, and Apple needs another category to dominate.

But maybe we should all temper our enthusiasm.

A Russian Apple blogger just made a showing off his concept for an Apple TV. (A French Apple blogger spotted it.)

It's?kind of boring. It looks like a TV.

And maybe that's the problem?TVs all look pretty much the same ? great.

They're thin with big screens and small, out-of-the-way frames.

How is Apple going to improve on that?

With software, obviously.

But don't we already have Apple TV software? Isn't it called Apple TV? Isn't Apple TV rather unpopular?

Here's the video:

Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird.

Havana - Canada and Cuba have plenty of room for growth in the areas of bilateral trade and cooperation, their top diplomats agreed on Saturday, according to Cuban state media.

Foreign Ministers Bruno Rodriguez and John Baird ?reviewed the state of bilateral ties and reaffirmed the desire to maintain and expand ties in trade, investment and tourism,? the official state news broadcaster said.

?The (Canadian) foreign minister also recognised the potential there is to diversify current economic and trade ties, and cooperation ties between the two countries,? it added.

It said Rodriguez thanked Baird ?for Canada's support in Cuba's fight against the blockade (embargo) imposed by the United States,? which has been in effect since 1962 against the Americas' lone Communist-ruled state.

Baird arrived in Cuba Friday from Mexico on a regional tour that also will also take him to Venezuela, Peru, Panama and the Dominican Republic.

Tourism is one of Cuba's economic mainstays. And in 2012, Canada was the source of more than one million of the 2.7 million tourists who visited Cuba. Canadian mining company Sherritt also is a big investor in nickel here. - Sapa-AFP

(AP) ? U.S. factories slowed production in January after two solid months of cranking out goods. The weakness mainly reflected a big drop in output at auto factories that is likely temporary.

Manufacturing output fell 0.4 percent in January from December, the Federal Reserve said Friday. The decline followed increases of 1.1 percent in December and 1.7 percent in November.

Overall industrial production edged down 0.1 percent in January compared with December. Output In mining, the category that covers oil and gas drilling, fell 1 percent. Utility output jumped 3.5 percent, as a cold snap led more households to turn up their heat.

Factory output, the most important component of industrial production, was dragged lower by a steep 3.2 percent decline in auto and auto parts production. The auto industry is coming off its best year for sales in five years, one of the few bright spots in an otherwise bleak manufacturing sector. Sales continue to rise, so production will likely rebound in February.

Still, many factories outside the auto industry have been hurt by a slowdown in consumer spending and weaker global growth that has dampened demand for U.S. exports.

Economists expect healthier output in 2013, partly because U.S. companies are sitting on large amounts of cash and appear poised to invest some of it in equipment and machinery. Economies in Europe are also healing, and growth in Asia is expected to improve.

"Global growth will still be fairly weak this year, which will prevent industry from firing on all cylinders. But there's no denying that industrial conditions have recently improved," said Paul Dales, senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics.

While manufacturing output was down in January, analysts noted there were big revisions that made November and December look even better than first reported. For the fourth quarter as a whole, manufacturing output rose at an annual rate of 1.9 percent, a significant improvement from the earlier estimate of a slight 0.2 percent rate.

A second report Friday showed that manufacturing activity in the New York area posted a big gain in February. The New York Federal Reserve's Empire State survey rose to 10.04 in February, compared with a negative 7.78 in January. It was the biggest one-month improvement in this index in more than two years.

And a closely watched survey released earlier this month suggests overall manufacturing conditions are improving. Manufacturing activity grew last month at the fastest pace since April, according to the Institute for Supply Management. Factories saw growth in new orders, hired more workers and boosted their stockpiles after two months of declines, the survey noted.

Slower growth in stockpiles was a key reason the economy shrank at an annual rate of 0.1 percent in the October-December quarter, the first contraction in 3 ? years. Deep cuts in defense spending and fewer exports also contributed to the decline.

Still, economists expect that figure will be revised in the coming months to show a small increase. That's because December trade data, which wasn't available when the government calculated its first estimate for fourth-quarter growth, showed solid growth in exports.

Economists at Barclays Capital estimate the economy expanded at a 0.5 percent rate in the fourth quarter. And growth will likely pick up in the January-March quarter to an annual rate of 1.5 percent, analysts forecast.

A better job market could boost consumer spending, leading to faster U.S. growth. Employers added 157,000 jobs in January and an average of 200,000 jobs a month since November. U.S. factories have added jobs for the past four months.

Still, unemployment remains high at 7.9 percent. And Americans are seeing smaller paychecks this year because of an increase in Social Security taxes, which could offset any benefits from stronger hiring.

Study: Alcohol responsible for 4 percent of cancer deaths | WGN-TV

alcohol-beerA new study from Boston University finds that alcohol is responsible for four percent of all cancer deaths.

Researchers say people are not aware of this link, and that doctors are not emphasizing the risks.

Reducing alcohol, they say, cuts down that risk.

The scientists say about 20,000 people in the United States die each year from cancer related to alcohol consumption.

The study found that for women, alcohol was most? commonly linked to breast cancer.

For men, cancers of the mouth, throat and esophagus were associated with alcohol.

Ada County, Dynamis end agreement of waste-to-energy project

Updated today at 6:18 PM

BOISE -- Plans to build a controversial waste-to-energy facility in Ada County have been scrapped.

Ada County and Dynamis Energy, LLC have jointly agreed to terminate their agreements regarding the project. But a lawyer says, the county will not be repaid $2 million already paid to Dynamis.

Ada County and Dynamis entered into an agreement about two-and-a-half years ago to build a waste-to-energy facility at the landfill. The county paid $2 million to Dynamis for the design.

But last year, the controversy began. Neighbors raised questions about health risks. "So, this concerns us as far as exactly what's coming out, and how far it's gonna come down," said Andre Gensburger in May of 2012.

Lawsuits and investigations aimed at the contract itself followed. Then, the county asked for its money back, after two new commissioners were elected.

Friday, just after noon, Ada County released a statement saying the project is off. It goes on to say that the Board of Commissioners and Dynamis representatives have carefully reviewed comments from the City of Boise and the City of Meridian, as well as the financial impacts and advisability of proceeding with the project. The termination comes as a result of a variety of factors concerning the project.

Ada County Commission Chairman Dave Case says it was a tough decision to make, but that they feel it's in the best interest of our constituents. There was a lot of public outcry over the project.

"This decision will help the county move forward in a positive direction with our continued commitment for greater transparency and collaboration," said Case.

"Dynamis is disappointed that the schedule no longer allows for the project to proceed. We wish the Ada County Commissioners success with their municipal solid waste and renewable energy strategies," said C. Lloyd Mahaffey, Chairman and CEO, Dynamis Energy, LLC.

Andrew Schoppe, the lawyer representing the group leading the charge against Dynamis, says his clients couldn't be happier. "Overall, I'd say we're elated."

He does not believe the $2 million will be repaid to the county. "That $2 million is gone."

But Schoppe says his clients prefer that to the project moving forward. "It's a bummer to put it mildly. But at the same time, everyone I've worked with, my clients and all of the people who have been part of the big coalition to stop this project, will take that as a bargain."

Schoppe says he'll have to meet with his clients to see if they want to continue their lawsuit against the county (involving local land use and the county giving a loan to a company), now that the project is off.

This all won't become official until the commissioners meet and sign the agreement. That will be a part of their meeting scheduled for next Tuesday at 9 a.m.

Satellites find freshwater losses in Middle East

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

A new study using data from a pair of gravity-measuring NASA satellites finds that large parts of the arid Middle East region lost freshwater reserves rapidly during the past decade.

Scientists at the University of California, Irvine; NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.; and the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., found during a seven-year period beginning in 2003 that parts of Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran along the Tigris and Euphrates river basins lost 117 million acre feet (144 cubic kilometers) of total stored freshwater. That is almost the amount of water in the Dead Sea. The researchers attribute about 60 percent of the loss to pumping of groundwater from underground reservoirs.

The findings, to be published Friday, Feb. 15, in the journal Water Resources Research, are the result of one of the first comprehensive hydrological assessments of the entire Tigris-Euphrates-Western Iran region. Because obtaining ground-based data in the area is difficult, satellite data, such as those from NASA's twin Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites, are essential. GRACE is providing a global picture of water storage trends and is invaluable when hydrologic observations are not routinely collected or shared beyond political boundaries.

"GRACE data show an alarming rate of decrease in total water storage in the Tigris and Euphrates river basins, which currently have the second fastest rate of groundwater storage loss on Earth, after India," said Jay Famiglietti, principle investigator of the study and a hydrologist and professor at UC Irvine. "The rate was especially striking after the 2007 drought. Meanwhile, demand for freshwater continues to rise, and the region does not coordinate its water management because of different interpretations of international laws."

Famiglietti said GRACE is like having a giant scale in the sky. Within a given region, rising or falling water reserves alter Earth's mass, influencing how strong the local gravitational attraction is. By periodically measuring gravity regionally, GRACE tells us how much each region's water storage changes over time.

"GRACE really is the only way we can estimate groundwater storage changes from space right now," Famiglietti said.

The team calculated about one-fifth of the observed water losses resulted from soil drying up and snowpack shrinking, partly in response to the 2007 drought. Loss of surface water from lakes and reservoirs accounted for about another fifth of the losses. The majority of the water lost -- approximately 73 million acre feet (90 cubic kilometers) -- was due to reductions in groundwater.

"That's enough water to meet the needs of tens of millions to more than a hundred million people in the region each year, depending on regional water use standards and availability," said Famiglietti.

Famiglietti said when a drought reduces an available surface water supply, irrigators and other water users turn to groundwater supplies. For example, the Iraqi government drilled about 1,000 wells in response to the 2007 drought, a number that does not include the numerous private wells landowners also very likely drilled.

"Water management is a complex issue in the Middle East -- an area that already is dealing with limited water resources and competing stakeholders," said Kate Voss, lead author of the study and a water policy fellow with the University of California's Center for Hydrological Modeling in Irvine, which Famiglietti directs.

"The Middle East just does not have that much water to begin with, and it's a part of the world that will be experiencing less rainfall with climate change," said Famiglietti. "Those dry areas are getting dryer. The Middle East and the world's other arid regions need to manage available water resources as best they can."

Study co-author Matt Rodell of Goddard added it is important to remember groundwater is being extracted unsustainably in parts of the United States, as well.

"Groundwater is like your savings account," Rodell said. "It's okay to draw it down when you need it, but if it's not replenished, eventually it will be gone."

What's up with supplements? - Star Observer

web stockxpertcom_id21922241_jpg_afe53534fa969bde766bd092178b9068

With the recent news an AFL club and other players may have allegedly provided players with potentially illegal performance-enhancing substances, there?s clearly a need for caution to be exercised when dealing with supplements.

Everyone likes the idea of a bit of extra help when you?re slaving away at the gym four or five times a week. But what should you know about taking supplements that aren?t available through reputable outlets?

Sports Medicine Australia, the peak organisation for professionals in sports medicine and science, urged those considering taking unknown supplements to think again.

web stockxpertcom_id40332151_jpg_060c820ec271ee5eb7f8b005e3b69d83The organisation?s spokesman and sports physician Dr Peter Larkins said with the prevalence of supplements at an all-time high, all those considering this path need to realise the dangers associated with dealing with products such as these before proceeding.

?There are a lot of people using supplements in the belief of enhancing their sporting performance,? Larkins said.

?Quite often they are unaware what the products may contain and are putting themselves at risk of ingesting banned substances such as anabolic substances and amphetamines.

?Sportspeople, whether at an elite or community level considering purchasing supplements of any kind should be aware that supplements should always be discussed in consultation with a suitable sports medicine practitioner or sports dietitian.

?This will ensure that what is purchased and used will not be detrimental to one?s health and not be a banned substance.?

CleanEdge is Sports Medicine Australia?s anti-doping and body image program for all participants of sport, physical activity, recreation and fitness in the community.

It can help you find real, effective and safe ways to enhance performance; the facts and consequences of doping; and the latest information on nutrition and supplements in the fitness industry.

New technology for producing hydrogen

Feb. 13, 2013 ? The PhD thesis of Aingeru Remiro-Eguskiza, a chemical engineer of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), deals with the quest for a process to produce hydrogen from bio-oil that has a lower impact on the environment than the process using current routes.

The gradual increase in the price of crude oil and the negative environmental consequences that its use entails are putting us on the threshold of a change of energy model that will need to be tackled over the coming decades. Faced with the obvious necessity of finding an energy alternative that will replace fossil fuels in the near future at least partially and in a gradual way, hydrogen is emerging as one of the alternatives.

Currently, hydrogen is obtained through various methods that require separating the hydrogen from other chemical elements like carbon (in fossil fuels) and oxygen (from water). The methods used for this purpose are not viable from an environmental or economic perspective, respectively, as far as the large-scale production of hydrogen is concerned.

The aim of this thesis was to contribute towards the laboratory scale development of a process for producing hydrogen from bio-oil by means of catalytic reforming using water vapour. Bio-oil is a heterogeneous mixture of wood-based oxygenated products, the catalytic transformation of which routinely entails problems of operability and deactivation of the catalyst. This is because when it is being heated, a fraction of the compounds that make up the bio-oil form a solid residue (the so-called pyrolytic lignin) which collects on the inlet pipes of the reactor and in the reactor itself. The bio-oil used for the research in the thesis was developed at an IK4-Ikerlan plant.

An in-house designed reaction unit

To solve the problems caused by the use of bio-oil, an in-house designed reaction unit was used and which comprises two stages: the thermal and the catalytic stages. In the thermal stage (in which the bio-oil is heated) the controlled deposition of the pyrolytic lignin takes place and this minimizes the operational problems and the deactivation of the catalyst. That way the compounds obtained in the thermal stage are more susceptible to being transformed.

In addition, a third stage has been incorporated into the process: the CO2 capture intended to intensify the production of H2 increases its purity and cuts the associated contaminating emissions. The process involves using an adsorber in the reaction bed and which is designed to capture the CO2. "When the CO2 is eliminated from the reaction bed, we are encouraging the displacement of the reaction equilibriums and, as a result, a greater yield and a greater output of hydrogen are obtained," explains Remiro.

In this context, he stresses that improvement in the CO2 capture in the reaction bed was verified when extremely pure hydrogen, close to 100%, was obtained and at a lower operating temperature with respect to the process minus the CO2 capture.

Probiotic-derived treatment offers new hope for premature babies

Feb. 13, 2013 ? "Good" bacteria that live in our intestines have been linked with a variety of health benefits, from fighting disease to preventing obesity. In a new study, Kriston Ganguli of Massachusetts General Hospital for Children and Harvard Medical School and her colleagues have discovered another advantage to these friendly microscopic tenants: Chemicals secreted by good bacteria that typically live in the intestines of babies could reduce the frequency and severity of a common and often-lethal disease of premature infants.

This disease, known as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), affects between 8 and 13 percent of very low birthweight infants (those under 3 pounds, 4 ounces), and up to half of the infants with this condition will die. As babies develop the collection of gut bacteria that colonize healthy intestines, those with NEC have an extreme inflammatory reaction that leads to damage and death of these tissues that often requires surgery to correct. Steroids are one of the few currently available ways to prevent NEC, but their use can cause undesirable complications.

Recent clinical trials of probiotics -- live microbes taken as dietary supplements to promote health -- have shown promise in reducing both the incidence and severity of NEC. However, in the U.S., the Food and Drug Administration does not sanction the use of whole bacteria in premature infants. Seeking a different tact that avoids the use of the bacteria themselves, scientists in the new study investigated whether secretions from probiotic bacteria could prevent NEC.

Methodology

As a model for a baby's immature gut, the researchers used intestinal tissue from infants with NEC as well as fetal intestinal tissues. The researchers also grew two probiotic strains of bacteria, L. acidophilus and B. infantus, in liquid culture medium, but removed the bacteria from the cultures. The material in which these bacteria were grown, known as the probiotic conditioned medium (PCM), contained secretions the bacteria left behind.

They then exposed human immature and mature intestinal tissues to either PCM or to material usually used to grow bacteria that had never contained microbes. They also exposed some tissues to a compound derived from bacteria that's known to cause an inflammatory response.

They analyzed the tissues for expression of genes known to respond to inflammation and looked at the effects of secretions from the two different probiotic strains separately to determine whether one had a greater anti-inflammatory effect than the other.

Results

The scientists found that treatment with just the PCM significantly reduced inflammation in both immature intestinal tissue and tissue from infants with NEC.

When the researchers analyzed gene expression in the PCM-exposed tissue, they found reduced activity of several genes linked with inflammation. Interestingly, PCM exposure did not affect mature intestinal tissue.

"Since an immaturity of intestinal immune responses is felt to be partially responsible for the development of NEC, the bioactive factors in PCM may be useful as an effective, targeted preventive strategy without the broad effects of steroids," explained Ganguli.

When the researchers tested the effects of secretions from B. infantis and L. acidophilus separately on fetal intestinal cells, they found that those from B. infantis alone showed a greater ability than L. acidophilus to reduce inflammation. While this does not rule out the possibility that the two together could have a greater synergistic effect, it does suggest that B. infantis may be primarily responsible for the anti-inflammatory effect observed.

Importance of the Findings

While NEC is a complex disease, the authors suggest that this study addresses a critical component of the problem. If purified secretions from probiotic bacteria can reduce the severity and incidence of NEC in very low birthweight infants, it could represent a very promising new avenue of clinical research, they say, and may ultimately change the standard of care for these infants.

They add that these promising findings could lead to future clinical studies to investigate these factors in greater detail. Eventually, the researchers add, secretions from probiotic bacteria may help prevent the development of NEC in premature infants in the U.S., potentially saving thousands of lives each year.

"The specific mechanisms by which probiotic secretions reduce inflammation need to be further investigated and safety data will need to be established in live animal models of NEC," says Ganguli. "Once established, these factors should be then investigated as a standard preventive strategy in a randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial."

Will the Government Start Taking 401(k) Money? - Money Morning

With Washington battling over what to do about its $16.4 trillion debt pile, rumors are swirling that the government will start taking 401(k) money to cure its fiscal ills.

There's plenty to take.

A study published by the Investment Company Institute in 2012 stated that U.S. retirement assets at the mid-point of the year totaled somewhere in the neighborhood of $18.5 trillion.

If you look specifically at what most Americans take advantage of - IRAs and 401(k) plans - they have amassed $3.5 trillion and $5.1 trillion, respectively.

These large sums of untaxed money are proving to be very tempting to an administration looking for revenue to help rein in our whopping national debt.

"The government is spending money like a drunken sailor, and they need to get their meat hooks into any cash stock pile they can," Money Morning Chief Investment Strategist Keith Fitz-Gerald explained in the accompanying video on why the government could start taking 401(k) money.

Here's why you should be alarmed.

Is the Government After 401(k) Money?

The idea of the government taking 401(k) money is part of a larger conversation happening in the financial community about retirement plans undergoing drastic changes.

Those rumored changes include limiting of deductions, retroactive taxation and a possible government takeover to force you to invest in U.S. Treasury bonds.

This call for reform didn't come out of nowhere - it has a track record dating back at least two years.

Here's what's been discussed in relation to 401(k) savings:

  • Back in 2010, the President's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform proposed lowering the cap on tax-deferred contribution limits for 401(k)s. The commission proposed limiting the annual cap on 401(k) employer/employee combined contributions to $20,000 from $49,000. That was the limit two years ago. Now the cap it is up to $51,000.
  • The President's Economic Recovery Advisory Board suggested either cutting or ending the retirement tax deduction entirely. This would be done in order to pay for an expansion of the Saver's Credit that targets low-income workers.
  • Also in 2010 Senators John Kerry, D-MA, and Jeff Bingaman, D-NM, recommended in meetings and public hearings at the Treasury and U.S. Labor Department that an "Automatic IRA" be established. Employers would be directed to contribute 3% of an employee's salary into a government retirement plan investing in Treasuries. The government would then guarantee a 3% return.
  • In September 2011, the Senate Finance Committee held a hearing to discuss retirement plan reform. It mostly talked about cutting 401(k) tax deductions. One proposal put on the table - in which we should take particular note - was to get rid of the entire 401(k) tax deduction and replace it with a flat government match anywhere between 18% - 30%. William Gale of the Brookings Institute came up with the idea. He believes that the 18% mark would increase tax revenues by $458 billion over 10 years.

But is there reason for concern or is it all just political posturing?

The American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries (ASPPA) in November 2012 started a media campaign with the intent to inform both employers and workers that the government is considering an overhaul of tax benefits for retirement savings accounts.

With them entering the fray, it's a good time to start paying attention to this threat to your money.

Will the Government Really Start Taking 401(k) Money?

Probably over the next few years there will be a lot of discussion involving tax reform and tax expenditures will be on the table. Expenditures are all the breaks the government allows us through the tax code.

Dallas Salisbury, chief executive of the Employee Benefit Research Institute, a nonprofit think tank, stated, "Should the parties take the approach that both have discussed-that is, a dollar limit on itemized deductions or a maximum tax rate applied to deductions-then retirement incentives will likely be left where they are, or very close to it."

However, if there is no substantial overhaul of the tax code, he believes that Congress will attempt to boost tax revenue through cutting contribution limits around the year 2014.

This is a story to keep tabs on. How you plan for retirement going forward could definitely be affect - whichever way the government decides to start taking 401(k) money.

Our Chief Investment Strategist Keith Fitz-Gerald first explored this story in 2010. Check out his analysis here: Why the Government Wants to Hijack Your 401(k)

2 Facebook Analyst Downgrades, Bleeding Over To LinkedIn

global network conceptFacebook, Inc. (NASDAQ: FB) has had a very tough time attractive investors since its recent earnings report failed to continue to drive interest. It should be no surprise that the stock cooled off after having risen back up more than 11% ahead of earnings to above $31 versus $28.00 at the end of 2012.

Now we have two more analyst downgrades adding pressure to Facebook shares. What is interesting is not just the 2.8% drop this Tuesday. What is interesting is that the shares broke under the 2012 close out price of $28.00 and are now trading down around $27.50 in normal trading volume.

Facebook shares were downgraded to Market Perform from Outperform at Bernstein. Then another firm named BTIG downgraded the social media giant from an already-cautious Neutral rating down to a "Sell" rating due to slowing user engagement trends. It was just recently, yet still after earnings, that Barron's drilled Facebook. When the stock was still above $30, Barron's said that perhaps it was far too bearish when the publication said that Facebook is not really worth a peak of $15.00 for its stock. It said that it should now just be worth no more than $25.00 per share.

Not all social media players are equal. LinkedIn Corporation (NYSE: LNKD) just hit an all-time on Friday and Monday and now shares are around $155 after taking a very small breather. LinkedIn is worth some $16.7 billion, while Facebook is worth some $65 billion or so.

Dead nan's wedding ring thrown in care home bin

A CARE home has been criticised for throwing the possessions of a 91-year-old grandmother, including a wedding ring, into a bin.

Elizabeth Cope died at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford on Friday January 26. She had been suffering from pneumonia.

Her funeral is due to take place this week and her granddaughter, Claire Cope, had hoped to place some of the lost items in her coffin.

Elizabeth had been a resident of the Eastlake care home in Nightingale Road, Godalming, with her two-year stay costing almost ?12,000 in total.

Ms Cope and friend Phil Bannister, who live in Godalming, visited Eastlake on the Monday following her grandmother?s death to collect her belongings.

Realising that there was too much for them to transport, they say they alerted three members of staff that they would return for the majority of the items on Wednesday January 30.

They were advised that they had one week to collect the items, which included a white chest of drawers, numerous family photographs, cuddly toys and Elizabeth?s handbags, one of which contained her wedding ring.

However, when Mr Bannister arrived to collect the items, he was told to pop back later before Ms Cope received what she described as a "frantic" phone call, informing her that her grandmother?s belongings had been thrown in the bin.

Ms Cope said: ?I have never felt so sad.

?It is bad enough that my lovely grandmother has passed away but not being able to have her things around me is just indescribable.?

Ms Cope said she was one of only a few family members still in touch with Elizabeth.

?Everything has just gone,? she said. ?She had been in hospital for three weeks and the care home had moved her into a new room so there would have been no rubbish for the belongings to get mixed up with.

?She never got to see the new room. I am appalled that this was allowed to happen and I still have not had a proper apology.

?I am finding it hard to concentrate on anything because I just can?t get it out of my head and it?s all because of some incompetent staff member at the care home.

?How could anyone possibly see all those things and assume they are rubbish? There should be strict checks on these things.

?We have looked at seeking out a solicitor but it?s really expensive.

?It?s not really the money we are worried about anyway, it?s the fact that they put my nan in the bin.

?This whole thing has caused a lot of distress and upset.?

Ms Cope claimed the care home company sent her two letters about the situation but was disappointed?they were addressed to Mr Bannister rather than herself.

She said: ?That just adds insult to injury. It is my grandmother we are talking about.

?It seems to be one thing after another.?

A spokesman for Anchor, the company that operates Eastlake, said: ?We are extremely sorry for the distress this has caused and apologised to the family as soon as we were aware of the error.

?We have reviewed our processes and spoken to all members of staff to ensure the utmost care is taken with residents? possessions.

?We are meeting the family to discuss how we can make amends.?

It's a bacon bonanza at Iowa festival

Thousands attended the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival this weekend, which celebrates all things associated with bacon in Des Moines. Events included lectures, eating contests, and a bacon queen pageant.?

By Barbara Rodriguez,?Associated Press / February 10, 2013

Bonnie, a Berkshire breed pig about 2 1/2 months old, waits for Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad to pardon her outside the governor's mansion Friday, in Des Moines, Iowa. The pardon is a first for the governor and a celebration of the annual Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival that begins this weekend at the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

The smell of bacon was in the air Saturday as thousands converged on Iowa's capital city for an increasingly popular festival celebrating all things connected with the meat.

Some people wore Viking hats and others walked around with makeshift snouts for the Blue Ribbon Bacon Festival. The annual event featured more than 10,000 pounds of bacon served in unusual ways, such as chocolate-dipped bacon and bacon-flavored cupcakes and gelato.

"I love bacon more than I love my job," said Katie Nordquist, who was dressed in a tuxedo T-shirt that looked like bacon Saturday for her first time at the festival.

And there was a lot of bacon to choose from. The smell of unique concoctions like bacon gumbo and chocolate bacon bourbon tarts wafted through one of two buildings at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The other building had an Iceland theme, with a Viking boat and Icelandic dishes with bacon, to honor a group of delegates visiting from the country.

Urbandale resident Mike Vogel showed up for a fourth year wearing a head-to-toe bacon costume. He said a widespread love for bacon is the reason about 8,000 tickets to the event sold out in just over three minutes.

"I think it's the right time of year when everybody's been cooped up," said the 39-year-old videographer. "It's a good time to get out, have some fun, try some new stuff, have a few beers and enjoy yourselves with everybody else."

Other events scheduled included lectures about bacon and an eating competition. The festival was preceded earlier in the week with a bacon queen pageant and a pig pardon by Gov. Terry Branstad.

Jessica Dunker, president and CEO of the Iowa Restaurant Association, said bacon used to be just a breakfast food. Now chefs from across the state and country use it in everything from vegetable dishes to desserts.

"It's come a long way and you can find it in almost any kind of food or beverage offering," she said.

Festival co-founder Brooks Reynolds, who officially started the event just a few years ago, said it's become the largest bacon showcase in the world. He called the event a "bacon fellowship."

"They can just bond with their fellow man and just celebrate the meat that everybody enjoys," he said.

Not many of us paid a lot of attention to the weather forecasting systems that the meteorologists use. When we did in the U.S., we were very cynical because the meteorologists just didn?t seem to get it right, almost to the point of the forecasts being a joke. But Superstorm Sandy quickly brought the problem to light: the European system predicted a direct hit on NYC 3 days before the U.S. system did, which was the same day of the storm ? a bit too late I would say. WOW! Why?

There is a rather significant difference between the two: the European system has faster computers, more data and better initialization data. This blog post from www.accuweather.com and video from the Today Show explains it all.

Fortunately for the U.S., the Europeans are allowing us to use their data, and have helped us figure out why the U.S. model isn?t performing as well. But it will take time and money to fix. So when planning your next outdoor party, make sure the forecast you consult is from the European model.

Bastress named head wrestling coach at York | d3wrestle.com

Published on February 7, 2013 by AV ????? No Comments

From York Sports Information

YORK, PA ? York College Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation, Paul Saikia, has announced that current assistant wrestling coach Duane Bastress has been named the Spartans? new head wrestling coach effective the end of the 2012-13 season. He replaces long-time head coach Tom Kessler who has announced he is stepping away from the program at the end of the campaign.

?First, I have to thank Dr. Waldner, Joe Merkle, and Paul Saikia for giving me the opportunity to become the next head coach of the York College wrestling program,? stated Bastress. ?This has been a dream of mine to become a head coach of a top-level wrestling program and to have an opportunity to do at my alma mater has me very excited and ready to lead this program into the next chapter. Make no mistake; I am following the greatest coach ever in the history of YCP wrestling. However, I look forward to tackling that challenge and continuing the great tradition that YCP wrestling has established.?

Bastress is very familiar to the Spartan program. He was a two-time NCAA Division III National Champion at 184 pounds, capturing the titles in 2005 and 2006. He went 40-0 his senior year en route to his second title. For his three-year Spartan career, Bastress went 97-6 and owned an overall collegiate mark of 114-21.

Saikia believes Bastress was a natural choice to lead the York program.

?We are very proud and fortunate to have such a qualified successor as Duane come from within our program. His accomplishments, dedication, and work ethic are awesome examples for our student-athletes. We believe his time working with Coach Kessler has prepared him for this advancement, and we look forward to many more years of York College wrestling success with Coach Bastress at the helm.?

Coach Kessler is pleased to see Bastress get a chance to lead the program.

?I?m very happy and excited for Duane to get the opportunity to continue the tradition and success of the York College wrestling program, which I have no doubt he will do. He has been an assistant coach for six seasons and is no doubt ready to move this program forward.?

During Bastress?s six years on the Spartan bench next to Kessler, York has accumulated a mark of 102-50-2 including a school-record 25 victories last winter. He has coached four wrestlers that have achieved six All-American finishes at the NCAA Championships. He was named the 2012 NWCA Division III National Assistant Coach of the Year and will be inducted into the NWCA Division III National Hall of Fame in March at this year?s national championships.

Taking over the reigns from Kessler has a special meaning for Bastress.

?Words can not describe what Coach Kessler has done for me over the years. He recruited me to York and then made sure I pushed myself on and off the mat. I remember to this day him saying to my dad, ?I don?t want him for just a semester, I want him to graduate from here.? That statement shows you the kind of coach and man that Coach Kessler is! He has always wanted the best for his student-athletes. Being an assistant coach under him for the last six years, I have witnessed what it takes to lead a successful program and what it takes to become a great coach. I am forever in debt to Coach Kessler for what he has done for me. I want to look back on my coaching career one day and say that my successes were because of the principles that Coach Kessler instilled in me as a student-athlete and then as an assistant coach.?

Saikia believes Bastress?s credentials allow the Spartan program to maintain continuity and excellence.

?Wrestling is a unique sport with a narrower appeal than many?those who participate and excel, are truly a special breed. With the strong tradition of our program, introducing Duane as our head coach ensures continuity and continues a legacy of leaders with those special characteristics. In addition, Duane has been very instrumental in our recruiting efforts, which is invaluable.?

The attitude that Bastress had on the mat has carried over to his coaching philosophy.

?The things that I want to accomplish as the next head coach is to continue the tradition of YCP wrestling and lead the program to levels that it has never been. The plan is simple; out work and out hustle the competition. I plan on bringing back more top five finishes at the NCAA championships and a national team championship to York. I also aspire to have several All-Americans both academically and on the mat. As the head coach, I want my student-athletes to experience what I experienced as a student athlete. The thrill, culmination, and satisfaction of winning at the NCAA national championships! The out work, out hustle, & out condition your opponent mantra will serve us well. This has always been my mentality and this will be my coaching staff and student-athletes mentality. The type of wrestlers that I want are, first and foremost, great students. I want wrestlers who are not satisfied with just winning but want to dominate their opponent in every aspect! We have one goal and that?s to become NCAA All-Americans and national champions! Our student-athletes must COMMIT TO THE SPARTAN for us to achieve these goals!?

Bastress and the Spartans conclude their regular season on February 15 with a trip to Elizabethtown. York then heads to Ada, Ohio to participate in the NCAA Regional Qualifier at Ohio Northern University on March 1 and 2.

Light-emitting nano triangles may have applications in optical technology

Feb. 5, 2013 ? For the first time, scientists have created single layers of a naturally occurring rare mineral called tungstenite, or WS2. The resulting sheet of stacked sulfur and tungsten atoms forms a honeycomb pattern of triangles that have been shown to have unusual light-emitting, or photoluminescent, properties. According to team leader Mauricio Terrones, a professor of physics and of materials science and engineering at Penn State, the triangular structures have potential applications in optical technology; for example, for use in light detectors and lasers.

The results of the research will be published in a print edition of the journal NANO Letters.

Terrones explained that creating monolayers -- single, one-atom-thick layers -- is of special interest to scientists because the chemical properties of minerals and other substances are known to change depending on their atomic thickness, opening the door to potentially useful applications of multi-layered materials of various thicknesses. In previous research, scientists had accomplished the feat of making a monolayer of graphene -- a substance similar to the graphite found in pencil leads. "The technique these researchers used was tedious, but it worked," Terrones said. "They basically removed, or exfoliated, the graphene, layer by layer, with Scotch tape, until they got down to a single atom of thickness."

Now, for the first time, Terrones and his team have used a controlled thermal reduction-sulfurization method -- or chemical vapor deposition -- to accomplish the same feat with a rare mineral called tungstenite. The scientists began by depositing tiny crystals of tungsten oxide, which are less than one nanometer in height, and they then passed the crystals through sulfur vapor at 850 degrees Celsius. This process led to individual layers -- or sheets -- composed of one atom in thickness. The resulting structure -- called tungsten disulfide -- is a honeycomb pattern of triangles consisting of tungsten atoms bonded with sulfur atoms.

"One of the most exciting properties of the tungsten disulfide monolayer is its photoluminescence," Terrones said. Terrones explained that photoluminescence occurs when a substance absorbs light at one wavelength and re-emits that light at a different wavelength. The property of photoluminescence also occurs in certain bioluminescenent animals such as angler fish and fireflies. "One interesting discovery from our work is the fact that we see the strongest photoluminescence at the edges of the triangles, right where the chemistry of the atoms changes, with much less photoluminescence occurring in the center of the triangles," Terrones said. "We also have found that these new monolayers luminesce at room temperature. So no special temperature requirements are needed for the material to exhibit this property."

Co-author Vincent H. Crespi, Distinguished Professor of Physics, Chemistry, and Materials Science and Engineering at Penn State, added, "The images of the photoluminescence are beautiful; the triangles light up all around their edges like little holiday ornaments -- holiday ornaments with potentially transformative, long-term applications in nano-optics."

The research has many potential applications in the fields of optical light detection, the production of light-emitting diodes, and even laser technology. The researchers also plan to try the chemical-vapor-deposition technology to grow innovative monolayers using other layered materials with potentially useful applications.

In addition to Terrones and Crespi, other researchers who contributed to this study include Humberto R. Guti?rrez, an assistant professor at the University of Louisville; Nestor Perea-L?pez and Ana Laura El?as, research associates at Penn State; Ayse Berkdemir and Ruitao Lv, posdoctoral fellows at Penn State; Bei Wang and Yuanxi Wang, graduate students at Penn State; and Florentino L?pez-Ur?as and Humberto Terrones, visiting professors at Penn State.

Support for this research comes primarily from the U.S. Army Research Office and, in part, from the Penn State Center for Nanoscale Science.

Genetic variation doubles risk of aortic valve calcification

Feb. 6, 2013 ? Researchers have found a genetic variant that doubles the likelihood that people will have calcium deposits on their aortic valve. Such calcification, if it becomes severe, can cause narrowing or a blockage of the aortic valve, a condition called aortic stenosis. The study is the first large-scale, genome-wide association study to uncover a genetic link to aortic valve calcification.

An article detailing the findings is published in the February 7, 2013 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.

The study's lead investigators -- from Johns Hopkins, Harvard University, McGill University, the University of Iceland and the National Institutes of Health -- found that having a genetic variant in the LPA gene, which codes for a type of cholesterol particle called lipoprotein (a), also increases the risk of developing aortic stenosis by more than 50 percent.

The researchers say their findings not only help explain why heart valve calcification may run in families, they could also lead to the development of targeted medications that might slow the progression of the disease. Statin medications, which reduce common forms of cholesterol that can clog blood vessels, have not been shown to reduce aortic valve calcification.

"This is an important step forward in understanding the biology of the development of aortic stenosis and how this common genetic variant, which is found in 7 percent of the general population, contributes to that risk," says Wendy Post, M.D., a cardiologist and associate professor of medicine and epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine who is a senior author of the study.

Non-genetic risk factors for aortic valve calcification include advancing age, high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol levels and smoking. Men are at higher risk than women.

In the study, the researchers first looked at 2.5 million gene variants, called single nucleotide polymorphisms or SNPs, among more than 6,900 people of white European background, and found that this variant in the LPA gene was strongly associated with having aortic valve calcification on a heart CT scan, according to lead author Catherine Campbell, M.D., formerly the chief cardiology fellow at Johns Hopkins who now works for Kaiser Permanente.

Lipoprotein (a) is an unusual type of cholesterol particle that circulates in the blood and is associated with an increased risk for heart attacks.

"Increased levels of lipoprotein (a) have been previously associated with aortic valve disease. However, prior studies could not differentiate whether it was simply a marker or a causal factor," says Campbell. "Our results provide the first evidence for a causal relationship between lipoprotein (a) and calcific aortic valve disease," she adds.

Once the researchers identified the association between the LPA gene variant and those with evidence of aortic valve calcium in that first group, they confirmed their findings among three other groups -- more than 2,000 people of Hispanic origin, about 2,500 African-Americans and more than 700 Germans.

The people in those three groups, as well as the initial 6,900 Caucasians, were participants in several ongoing studies -- the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA); the Framingham Heart Study; the Age, Gene/Environment Susceptibility (AGES) study in Iceland; and the Heinz Nixdorf Recall study in Germany. All had previously undergone a CT scan to look for the presence of aortic valve calcium.

The researchers also were able to demonstrate an association between the LPA gene variant and the future development of clinical aortic stenosis in two independent groups -- more than 28,000 research participants in Sweden and more than 10,000 participants in Denmark.

Aortic stenosis, when calcified plaque causes narrowing in the aortic valve, can cause chest pain, loss of consciousness and shortness of breath. In severe cases, patients may need aortic valve replacement surgery. More than 1 million individuals in the United States have aortic stenosis, making it the most common form of valve disease.

"Advancing age is a major risk factor for aortic stenosis and with the aging of the population, this will become an even bigger health concern," says Post. "We believe our findings will help us better understand the biology of how valve calcification develops and open the door to new avenues of therapy, possibly with medicines that lower lipoprotein (a) levels in the blood," she says.

The study was funded by multiple grants through the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute as well as other funding agencies.

Yemen army raid kills 10 suspected militants: militia source

ADEN (Reuters) - Yemen's military killed 10 suspected militants in air and artillery strikes on Saturday, a pro-government militia source said, as authorities battle insurgents linked to al Qaeda who seized several southern towns last year.

The assault took place near the town of Shuqra in Abyan province, an impoverished, mountainous region of southern Yemen where tribal law holds sway and Islamist militants have a strong presence.

Tackling lawlessness in Yemen, which lies near important oil shipment routes and flanks the world's biggest oil exporter Saudi Arabia, is an international priority.

Washington and other Western governments regard Yemen-based al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) as one of the most dangerous offshoots of the militant network. It has planned attacks on international targets including airliners and pledges to topple Saudi Arabia's ruling family.

Yemen's military and tribal militias ousted an Islamist group called Ansar al-Sharia, which is affiliated with AQAP, from the towns of Jaar and Zinjibar in Abyan province last year. The militants had imposed sharia law in the towns and raised al Qaeda flags.

On Thursday the army and militias launched an attack on remnants of the Ansar al-Sharia holed up in caves in the area, killing two militants. Five soldiers were also killed.

Yemen, the poorest Arab state, was thrown into political disarray in early 2011 when mass protests against long-time ruler Ali Abdullah Saleh prompted fighting in the capital Sanaa and splits in the military.

Saleh was forced from power a year ago but the transitional government still faces an insurgency by Shi'ite Muslims in the north, the battle with Sunni Islamists in southern areas and a southern secession movement.
